Hockey Tournament Gifts

The past 2 years I have volunteered to make "hockey mom" gifts for our home hockey tournament. Many times when you go to junior league hockey tournaments the home team will give out little gifts to the moms (or dads). Most of the time they are homemade little trinkets with the child's name and/or jersey number. A little something to show our appreciation to the parents for supporting our tournament.

Last year we made wooden star pins. Each star was spray painted each teams color. We added the players name and number to the front and hot glued a pin to the back. They looked great! Lots of moms wore them during the tournament.

This year we decided to go a different route and make keychains. Each keychain has the teams colors, number beads, and a wooden star with the players name. We just finished making them today---198 of them!! It was a lot of work, but again, I think they turned out great! I hope the other mom's like them as much as I do.

Now to start planning for next year..... :)

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close

"Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" by Jonathan Safran Foer---**** (4 stars, out of 5)

Oskar is not your typical 9 year old. He asks LOTS of questions, retains knowledge about everything, and is a avid inventor. On Sept. 11th, his life comes crashing down when his father is killed during the 9/11 terrorist attack. A year after his fathers death he finds a mysterious key among his belongings. He sends himself on a quest to find the lock to the key throughout New York. The quest takes him to many places and different people, including a long lost grandfather.

I picked this book up after seeing and hearing about the upcoming motion picture based on the book. I was surprised to find that it wasn't exactly as I thought it would be, however it made it that much more interesting. The book is difficult to read, especially at first. The chapters written from Oskar's point of view are very jumbled with lots of run on sentences. Other chapters are written from other characters point of view through letter form, with some being written 40 years prior. It can all be a little confusing. While some might find it too hard to follow and give up, I found it interesting and wanted to know how it was going to come together in the end. A definite heartfelt book with so many underlying meanings and feelings. If you can get through the confusion, I would highly recommend the book. Looking forward to seeing how the movie compares.

So, I'm sure I have zero followers....but I'm thinking about making a blogging come back. Seems like every year around this time I think about starting back up. What to blog about is the real question!? I think more than anything this blog becomes my own personal journal (which happens to be published online for the world to see).

Last Saturday I attended a scrapbooking crop to benefit a precious little girl Jordyn. Jordyn is 3 years old and was recently diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. I currently watch her little brother in the daycare and used to watch Jordyn before she went off to pre-school. Immediately after hearing the news my friend and I decided to host a scrapbooking day to help raise money for their doctor bills. You can read more information about Jordyn here: LoveJordyn

This is the first time I have sat down to scrapbook in about 6 months! I don't know what happened, I just lost track of it. BUT, I was really excited to jump back in. With my new-found motivation, I took about 3+ hours on Monday and completely cleaned my scrap desk and reorganized. I'm ready to dive back into my love of scrapping!!!!!

Yep, every morning around 10am I am in the backyard cleaning up the dog doo-doo. One of my least favorite jobs in the world. But, if I didn't clean it up I would have kids running around with it on their shoes (which is WAY worse to clean up!). Oh, the joys of pet ownership.

"The Last Song"

"The Last Song" by Nicholas Sparks---*** (3 stars)

Ronnie & brother Jonah are sent to North Carolina to spend the summer on the beach with their father. Three years prior, their parents divorced causing a great amount of friction between Ronnie and her father.

Ronnie is not happy about spending the entire summer away from her life in New York and does everything she can to show how upset she is. However he father takes it all in stride and is extremely patient and understanding.

The book is written in 4 different perspectives---Ronnie, Steve (father), Will, and Marcus. Each perspective gives the reader a little more incite into the plot and characters.

In the end this book was more than just a summer romance book. It's about change, learning to love yourself and others around you, and building lasting relationships. It left you with a renewed sense of wanting to take moreI time with those you love. I would definitely recommend it to others.

Holiday Cards

It's barely past Halloween and everywhere you go it's suddenly Christmas! I'll admit, I "try" to start my Christmas gift buying early. Mostly due to the fact that I need to spread the money out over a few months. Plus, it's nice to enjoy the holidays rather than be frazzled with too many things to do.

So today I'm thinking about Christmas cards. A couple years ago I made 50+ cards to send out. I was so on top of it! Last year, I scrambled at the last minute and put together a photo card a week before Christmas. While I really loved having the homemade touch a few years ago, I was amazed at the options available for photo cards. It's definitely not the same as it was 10 years ago! The options are almost endless!

Here's a layout I did with last years photo card:

I love the simplicity of it with the black and white and just a dot of red. I also love the multiple photos (let's me pick the best photo of everyone.). I would love to have something similar to this for this year.

I decided to start my search for the perfect card at Shutterfly. Shutterfly is a great online photo resource for photo sharing, photo books, cards, calendars, etc., etc. Their holiday card selection alone has a gazillion options! The set-up makes finding the perfect card for you so simple. Items are categorized by style, # of photos, size, and even color. It makes searching for my simple, multiple photo card SO much easier!

After refining my search, here are a few that popped out at me right away:

I love how the photos are the main focus on the card. This can have up to 6 photos.

This is real similar to the first one, but with a little tree added.

This one is so fun! Love the non-traditional colors.

I love all of them!!!! What's fun is I can create each one with different photos and then decide. Crap, I have to pick photos too! Good thing I'm starting early.......

Norwex

Last month I was invited to a Norwex home party. I'll be honest, I was very skeptical about these high priced "cloths". Not to mention a party for cleaning supplies?? Not your typical candle, jewelery party. Anyway, I went to the party (mostly for the free margaritas!) and was pretty surprised at what I found.

"All Norwex products support our company mission to improve the quality of life by radically reducing the use of chemicals in personal care and cleaning. With a commitment to effective cleaning, responsible care for the earth, and the power of information, together we can become a generation to leave behind a legacy of improved quality of life."

While I consider myself a "green" person, I'm not a fanatic about it. I recycle and reuse things on a day to day basis. I believe that "organic" is great, but I don't go out of my way to solely use organic products. However some of the Norwex products sold me and intrigued me more than I thought they would. Many of the products are pretty high priced so I decided to just try a couple items to start.

Basic Package: Antibac Enviro Cloth & Antibac Window Cloth

I decided to try out a couple of their more popular products: Enviro Microfiber Antibac Cloth & Window Cloth. I've had these cloths for just a week and I tell you what---I love them!!! I have used the Enviro Cloth for EVERYTHING! I've used it to clean off the kitchen counters, table, stove, walls, doors, sink, windows....seriously I think I could go on and on. What's amazing about these cloths is that you don't use any cleaning agent at all. Water. That's it. Water. AND it cleans just as well or even BETTER than my Comet or Fantastic would have. Actually, I haven't broke out my kitchen sprays at all in the past week. Just think of the money I'll save on cleaning supplies! (I get a little crazy when I save money....)

Tonight I've been invited to another Norwex party. Of coarse I'm looking forward to some free drinks and girl time, but this time I'm excited to try out a few more of their products. The problem is, there are so many products I want to try! Here's a few items on my wish list:

I've been obsessed with a blog called "Eighteen25". The site features lot of crafting projects and all around family fun. It's loaded with fun ideas! (If you follow their lead, everyone will think you are a crafting genius!!!).

This week the gals at Eighteen25 started a new photo series- "Snapshots of Life". Every Wednesday evening they will post a time of the day. Your assignment on Thursday is to stop and take a picture of what you are doing at the time posted. I LOVE photo challenges and I couldn't wait to get started! I set my phone to remind me and at 5pm today I was ready!

"The Cinderella Deal" by Jennifer Crusie--*** (3 stars)

The story starts by introducing Daisy Flattery and Linc Blaise, apartment neighbors who couldn't be more opposite one another. Daisy is a free spirit, animal loving artist. Linc, a history professor with cold sterile furniture. While interviewing for a new job, Linc is found trapped in a lie that may cost him the job. He turns to Daisy to help him out.

I like to call this a "nice and fluffy" book. A very romantic comedy of sorts. Follows along the lines of a modern Cinderella story. Excellent read if you are looking for something lighthearted and witty. Super quick read!

"The History of Love" by Nicole Krauss--** (2 stars)
"The History of Love" travels through time following a manuscript. We are introduced to a man, Leo, who writes a novel for his long time love, Alma. Now many, many years later he is alone and struggling to survive day to day life. He even makes up ways for people to notice him--spilling coffee, posing nude for an art class, etc. Meanwhile, a 14 year old girl is on a mission to find her mother a mate. Alma finds herself trying to solve a mystery involving the book her mother is translating--The History of Love.

While I only gave this book 2 stars, I did find it very interesting. Each chapter was written (in various styles) by a different character in the book---all revolving around "The History of Love" manuscript. Because of this, the first half was very difficult to follow---moving through time spans, people, places, etc. By the end everything started to come together and I understood how everyone was connected in some way through The History of Love. The manner and wording that the author uses is very brilliant. Some people may like it better than others.

Val, Kayla, and Antoinette have been friends for twenty years. Each year they have their own "night out" under the stars on the beach of Nantucket. They swim (in the nude!), drink wine, and tell each other their deepest, darkest secrets. Until one year, things take a wrong turn when one friend heads for the water and never returns.

Nantucket Nights was a very fun book full of suspense. It is a short book so it was a super quick read (which is really nice when you are short on time!!). Each chapter kept me wanting to read more, looking for more clues. Many twists and turns take you on a fun ride throughout the book. I will definitely pick up a few more of Hildergrand's book to read in the future!

I am waaayyyyy behind this week on the Scrap Whispers challenge! My weekends are consumed with nothing but hockey and on the weekdays I'm playing catch up with the housework! Eeeekk! It's only Wednesday so you still have time to get in on this week's Scrap Whispers challenge.

"The Other Boleyn Girl" by Philippa Gregory --** (2 stars)
A friend of mine passed this book along to me, knowing that I like to read historical fiction books. Since I haven't read any books during this era I was anxious to read it. However, I found myself really uninterested and disappointed.

This book revolves around Mary Boleyn---"an innocent girl of fourteen" who catches the eye of Henry VIII. Mary finds herself in the center of her families great plan to become part of the royal family. However, each chapter finds the family deeper and deeper into lies, scheming, and betrayal.

While the story itself sounds like a page turner, I found myself reading just to finish the book. Maybe it was the evilness of the family, the length of the book (which was just insanely large considering the story), or poor writing. I just never really got into this book. I'm amazed that it went as far as becoming a movie! Maybe I'll see it, maybe not. At least it would only be 2 hours of my time instead of two weeks!

"Still Alice" by Lisa Genova---**** (4 stars)
Harvard professor, Alice Howland, is a leader in the psychology field. She travels all over the world delivering speeches for thousands of professionals. She has three grown successful children and a brilliant biologist husband. Her life was perfect is almost every way. Then one day while out for a typical jog around the neighborhood, she found herself lost and disoriented. She also finds herself forgetting words and small little things everyday. She visits her doctor and finds something she had never expected.

This book takes you through a journey of a women in her early 50's experiencing early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Having a loved one dealing with the disease in my own life, this book really touched home for me. The book was very well written in the perspective of Alice. Watching her deteriorate throughout the book was almost more than I could handle. I found myself extremely overwhelmed with emotion several times. A definite must read!

I finished another book!!! After reading "Those Who Save Us", I decided to read a lighter, easier read. My friend had loaned me the book "Summer Island" by Kristin Hannah. This past fall I read "Firefly Lane" by the same author and loved it. I thought I'd give it shot!

"Summer Island" by Kristin Hannah--*** (3 stars)
This story starts out with a mom and a daughter. Nora, the mother, is living the high life as a successful radio and newspaper advice columnist. She is loved nationwide! Meanwhile her daughter Ruby struggles day-to-day as a comedian/waitress in Hollywood. An ugly divorce in Ruby's teens had separated mother and daughter long ago. A scandal is unleashed on Nora and sends them both back to their cottage retreat on "Summer Island", forcing them to face issues that were buried deep in the many years that separated them.

Love, family, heartache, forgiveness, and death are just a few issues dealt with in this book. It really made me stop and look at just how important my family is--no matter what struggles they have been through. While I never really felt a deep connection with any character in the book, it keep me interested and turning the pages. As with other Hannah books I could sense what was about to happen, but not exactly. It left me with a positive feeling, something that makes you feel happy after you read a good book. I look forward to reading many more books by Kristin Hannah!

Another week, another challenge! This week was truly a challenge for me. I am not a big fan of the color purple. I rarely use it in layouts. This weeks challenge at Sc rap Whispers is to create a layout (or card) using the colors turquoise and purple. I found the perfect photos and patterned paper for the challenge. "Those Who Save Us"

In 2009 I got back into a long time hobby of reading again. I've even joined with a few friends and started a book club! I'm finding it so relaxing at night to wind down with a book. Prior to kids, I was mostly a mystery book reader---Grisham, Patterson, etc. But, now I'm really trying to push myself to read ALL types of books. I've found that I really enjoy reading historical fiction books. Usually these books take me much longer to read, but it's made me to want to learn more about different events/people in history (I've never been a history buff, so it's all new to me!).

While I'm not really good at writing reviews, I'm going to attempt to give a brief synopsis of each book I read this year. I'll rank each book on a 1-4 scale with 4 being the highest rating. This is a great way to keep track of the books I've read and give others some book suggestions. So here it goes, my first book of the year........

"Those Who Save Us" by Jenna Blum--*** (3 stars)
I decided to start off the year with a historical fiction book centered around WWII in Germany. This book was written in the prospective of two women growing up in Germany during WWII. It switches back and forth throughout the book from present day and early 1940's. The 1940's portion of the book travels through the war with Anne, a German girl in her late teens and early 20's. Anne endures some very VERY troublesome times trying to raise her daughter alone amist the war. She does whatever she can to ensure her daughters safety and survival. On the flip side we experience the present day, Trudy, Anne's daughter who despretely yearns to learn about her past.

While many parts of this book were difficult to read, because of the nature of the content, I found it very interesting to read about this time period from a women's prospctive---especially a German women's prospective. I can't even imagine going through any of it and surviving. A very powerful book. I would definitley recommend it to all women.

Challenge #50: Stars and Spikes

The Scrap Whispers challenges are BACK!!!!! I am so excited. Mostly to inspire me to get back into my scrapbooking. I haven't scraped anything in soooooo long! First I need to clean off my desk (which has been a dumping spot lately for anything and everything!).

Our first challenge for the new year is a fun one. This week's challenge is to create a layout using "stars & spikes". Spikes?? Interpret whatever way you wish! There are so many different directions you could take with it.

Is everyone geared up for the holidays?? I swear it comes earlier and earlier every year! To get you in the holiday mood I have created a fun Christmas kit for you!!! I had so much fun with this kit. This week at Scrap Whispers it was MY turn to create a challenge! I have a very specific challenge for you--a recipe challenge! You have to use the following "ingredients" on a layout:

1 piece of 12x12 cardstock
1 piece of 5x7 patterned paper

1 piece of 8x8 patterned paper (nb all the patterned paper has to be different)

Within the last few years digital has taken the scrapbooking world into a new realm. While I haven't tried my hand at it (yet), there are some AMAZING digi artists out there. My personal favorite is an online friend of mine--Leah. Leah creates layouts in both digital form and paper. I love her funky, yet simplistic style. Leah also has a digital shop online--Funky Playground. Make sure to stop over and check it out!

Challenge #42: Color Challenge

So, I know that I've been slacking on my blog lately. So much going on this past month: vacations, school, hockey, soccer, etc, etc, etc. I actually didn't scrap for OVER A MONTH!!! Can you believe that?? BUT, last weekend I finally broke the spell and completed 5 layouts. Now I'm back and ready to get things moving along again. I hope to continue to update my blog as usual. :)

This week we started back up the Scrap Whisper challenges! Each week we will have another challenge for you to complete. Every other week all members who complete the challenge will be eligible for an RAK! Make sure you stop over and check it out.

Looking for a fun place to chat, share ideas, inspire others, and have fun??!!! I have 2 new opportunities for you!

#1--It is time for Moments to Remember (M2R) to add a few new ladies to our Design Team!

We are looking for enthusiastic, fun, chatty, talented, & committed scrappers. We are open to your fresh ideas and energy to take our friendly site up a notch. Please include a paragraph or 2 on why you are interested in joining our team and what you can offer. Two of the specific requirements we have open will be help with our 2x monthly newsletter and also managing our blog.

Submissions will be taken from: May 23 - June 15th, 2009
Design Team members will be notified no later June 17th, 2009 via email. Be ready to transition with our current team during the remaining month of June and officially start your position July 1st, 2009.

You will be required to upload layouts for the July kit by July 1, 2009 for the reveal of our kit.

This will be a 6 month term ending December 31st.

Please include in your email:
Name, address, phone number,
link to
your blog (if you have one)
and any online galleries that display the scope of your work.

Please submit: 3 layouts, any size and 1 altered project to Robin at

This includes posting on the boards, leaving comments in the gallery,
posting challenges/questions, moderating at least 1 thread on our forum and most important...encouraging others!

There will be a Design Team monthly rotation for hosting challenges,
teaching classes (a how-to for an altered project or layout), submitting how-to articles for the Moments To Remember newsletter.

We are also looking for Design Team members who would be willing to take on the responsibility of managing the Moments To Remember Blog
(http://www.moments2remembernewsupdates.blogspot.com/) and help with the construction of the Moments to Remember newsletter. Please indicate in your application if you would be willing to help with these duties.

We are looking for design team members who fit into our friendly and encouraging community and are interested in helping us GROW and add new members to the site! We would prefer that you are on only 1 other DT, other than M2R so that you can be 100% committed.

We are looking for one more Design Team Member to join our established team. We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic, talented, punctual, committed and inspiring. You need not have any DT experience but if you do, thats a bonus. We do however ask that you are not on more than one DT currently.

Your responsibilities will include:

- Participating in weekly challenges
- Responsible for getting involved in and becoming an integral part of our forum
- Leaving messages and words of encouragement in both our gallery and on peoples blogs
- Running a team of approx 6 people, organizing them in the main whisper challenges and keeping them on track to meeting the final deadline.
- Meeting all deadlines set for weekly challenges
- Participating in any online crops or activities
- Setting one weekly challenge on the blog throughout your term

What you will need

- Drive and enthusiasm
- Creative Flair
- Willingness to learn and to teach others
- Strong team working skills
- Your own blog

What you will receive
As we are a fun challenge blog, we are not funded by any stores and seek sponsorship to provide prizes when we can - therefore we cannot provide monthly scrapbook supplies to you. We can however provide the following:

- Increased traffic to your own blog
- The opportunity to develop yourself

National Scrapbooking Day Week #3 challenges at Moments to Remember are up and ready to go!!! This week we are traveling to Africa and Australia.

This week I'm going to take you on a safari tour through Africa. Here we will meet all sorts of wild animals. My challenge for you this week is to create a layout using animal print somewhere on the layout.

For my example I used animal print letters in the title and also some REAL animal print in the photos.Stop over to the Moments to Remember forum to see what the other DT members have for you!! Can't wait to see your "wild" layouts!

Challenge #28: Double Jeopardy

Scrap Whispers Challenge #28 is slightly unusual. We want you to split your page in two and create one layout but with 2 different sides to it. So for example - heaven and hell (white and angelic side v red and black side); sunshine and darkness; ying and yang; red and blue on one side, yellow and green on the other; maybe soccer or football team supporters; a little girl who loves all things barbie and pink but who also loves rock concerts or cars; different seasons....etc, etc. The possibilities are a plenty!

I didn't quite split my page in half, but instead decided to take this challenge and put more of it in the journaling. Here's my take:

During the month of May Moments to Remember is hosting a "Around the World" celebration. Instead of just having one day to celebrate National Scrapbooking Day we thought we should make it a month long event! Each week the design team members are posting challenges that will have you traveling the world. Last week we traveled through North and South America. This week we are taking our voyage to the other side of the world to the far east.

This week I am taking you to India! For my challenge I want you to create a layout using the bright vibrant colors you will find in the Indian spices. Lots of oranges and reds!

NSBD Whisper Challenge

Today is National Scrapbooking Day!!!!!!! There's only one way to celebrate and that's to scrap the day away!!!

The design team members at Scrap Whispers decided to do a little blog hopping in honor of this super awesome day! Some of you may have stumbled upon my blog by way of Telah--a big shout out to Telah!!! Thanks sweetie! Here's a layout I completed a while back, but thought I'd bring it back out for this special occasion. I run a childcare business in my home so my kids have been around lots of babies over the past 4 years. My son Dylan is awesome with babies! He's loves being goofy and who better to entertain than a baby! I like to call him the "baby whisperer".

Scrap Whispers Challenge #26

Your challenge this week at Scrap Whispers is to create a layout entirely from black and white - we're talking black and white photos; black and white embellishments; black and white lettering; black and white paper; black and white ribbon; black and white everything.... apart from one item!!

We want you to create a completely black and white layout but to include just one item with some color. It could be one flower, one piece of ribbon, one button, one letter - the choice is yours!

I think spring fever has got me and my blog is suffering! Eeeek! This month has been insane and I don't see an end in sight.
